Today in Canadian History - November 1, 1959
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante struck in the face by a puck shot by Andy Bathgate of the New York Rangers. After being taken to the dressing room to recieve stitches, he refuses to re-enter the game without his practice mask. Without a substitute goalie, Habs’ coach Hector “Toe” Blake reluctantly permits Plante to go back in the game with his legendary mask for the first time in an NHL game.
